Bulgaria

Bulgaria is one of Europe's most layered and least-crowded destinations, where ancient Thracian tombs, Ottoman bazaars, and Byzantine monasteries sit within easy reach of one another. The country stretches from the dramatic Balkan Mountains through rose-filled valleys to a long Black Sea coastline, offering remarkable variety in a compact geography. For travelers who want genuine culture, wild nature, and centuries of history without the shoulder-to-shoulder crowds of Western Europe, Bulgaria consistently delivers.

Good to know
Bulgarian uses the Cyrillic alphabet, so learning a handful of key words and downloading an offline translation app goes a long way; also note that Bulgarians shake their head for "yes" and nod for "no" — the opposite of most Western conventions — which can cause delightful confusion at first.
