Turkey

Turkey is one of the world's great crossroads destinations, where ancient civilizations, Byzantine grandeur, and Ottoman splendor layer seamlessly over a landscape that spans two continents. From the minarets of Istanbul to the surreal rock formations of Cappadocia and the turquoise coves of the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, the country rewards travelers with extraordinary diversity in a single trip. Its cuisine alone — rich mezes, slow-roasted kebabs, freshly baked simit, and honey-drenched baklava — is reason enough to make the journey.

Good to know
While English is widely spoken in tourist areas, learning a few words of Turkish — particularly "teşekkür ederim" (thank you) — goes a long way with locals; don't overlook the lesser-visited regions of eastern Anatolia and the Black Sea coast, which offer dramatic scenery and a more authentic, unhurried pace of travel.
