Togo

Tucked between Ghana and Benin on West Africa's Gulf of Guinea, Togo is a slender, underexplored country that rewards curious travelers with remarkable cultural depth and natural variety. From the red-clay hill villages of the Kpalimé plateau to the stilt settlements of Lake Ahémé and the vivid voodoo markets of Lomé, Togo offers an authentic West African experience with relatively few crowds. Its compact size makes it surprisingly easy to move between rainforest, savanna, and coastline within a single trip.

  • Voodoo markets & fetish shrines
  • Kpalimé waterfalls & rainforest
  • Tamberma fortified tower houses
  • Atlantic beach coastline
  • Grilled brochettes & fufu cuisine
  • Vibrant Lomé grand market
Best time to visit
November through February offers the most comfortable travel conditions, when dry harmattan winds keep temperatures manageable and rainfall is minimal across most of the country.
Ideal trip length
8–12 days, which allows enough time to explore the coastal capital, climb into the central highlands around Kpalimé, and reach the UNESCO-listed Batammariba region in the far north.

Good to know
French is the official language, so even a handful of basic phrases goes a long way with locals and smoothes interactions in smaller towns. Don't overlook the north — the Koutammakou landscape, home to the Batammariba people and their extraordinary earthen tower-houses (tata somba), is one of West Africa's most distinctive UNESCO World Heritage Sites and well worth the journey inland.
