San Marino

Perched atop Monte Titano in the heart of the Italian peninsula, San Marino is the world's oldest republic and one of its smallest countries — yet it packs an outsized punch for history lovers. Its medieval old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rewards visitors with dramatic hilltop panoramas, well-preserved fortresses, and centuries of quietly proud independence. Despite its tiny footprint, San Marino offers a genuinely distinct cultural identity that sets it apart from the surrounding Italian countryside.

Good to know
San Marino is an enclave entirely surrounded by Italy, so Italian is the official language and the country is most easily reached by bus from Rimini on the Adriatic coast — renting a car gives you the most flexibility. Don't leave without picking up an official San Marinese passport stamp at the tourism office, a beloved keepsake that makes the visit feel truly official.
