Russia

Russia is the world's largest country by landmass, stretching across eleven time zones from the Baltic coast to the Pacific Rim — a scale that makes every journey feel genuinely epic. Travelers are drawn by an extraordinary layering of history: onion-domed Orthodox cathedrals, imperial Romanov palaces, and Soviet-era monuments stand side by side in cities that have shaped world civilization. Beyond the grand cities, Russia offers some of the planet's most dramatic wilderness, from the volcanic Kamchatka Peninsula to the crystal-clear depths of Lake Baikal.

Good to know
Russian is the dominant language and the Cyrillic alphabet is used everywhere, so learning a handful of phonetic basics and downloading an offline Cyrillic transliteration tool will go a long way in smaller cities; within the major tourist corridors of Moscow and St. Petersburg, English signage is increasingly common, but outside those hubs it drops off quickly — and don't overlook the Golden Ring towns northeast of Moscow, a circuit of ancient fortress cities that reveals medieval Russia in remarkable depth.
