Mauritania

Mauritania is one of West Africa's most dramatically underexplored destinations, where the Sahara Desert sweeps to the edge of the Atlantic Ocean and ancient caravan cities rise from golden dunes. The country offers a rare, raw sense of discovery — travelers who venture here find towering sand seas, medieval mud-brick libraries, and some of the richest migratory bird habitat on earth. It is a destination for the genuinely curious, rewarding those willing to step far off the beaten path.

Good to know
French and Hassaniya Arabic are the dominant languages, so a handful of French phrases goes a long way with locals and guides. Don't overlook the Adrar Plateau region — its ancient ksour (fortified villages) and sweeping ergs are the geographic and cultural soul of the country.
