Destination Inspiration
Libya
Libya is a vast North African country where ancient Mediterranean civilizations left behind some of the world's best-preserved Roman and Greek ruins, set against dramatic desert and coastal landscapes. From the turquoise shores of the Mediterranean to the sweeping golden dunes of the Sahara, the country offers a striking range of natural and historical wonders. For the historically curious traveler willing to venture off the well-worn path, Libya is a genuinely rare and rewarding destination.
Libya at a Glance
- Best time to visit
- Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the most comfortable temperatures for exploring both coastal ruins and the interior desert, avoiding the intense summer heat and the cooler, windier winter months.
- Ideal trip length
- 10–14 days, which allows enough time to meaningfully cover the Mediterranean coastal sites, the Saharan interior around Ubari and the Fezzan, and the ancient cities of the northeast.
- Good to know
- Arabic is the official language, and outside major cities very little English is spoken, so arranging a knowledgeable local guide is strongly recommended — this also unlocks access to remote sites that are difficult to navigate independently. Don't overlook the Fezzan region in the southwest, home to the surreal Ubari Sand Sea and ancient Garamantian rock art that rivals anything in the country.
