Laos

Laos is Southeast Asia's most unhurried country — a landlocked nation of mist-draped mountains, sacred Buddhist temples, and the mighty Mekong River winding past riverside villages that feel untouched by time. From the UNESCO-listed ancient capital of Luang Prabang to the mysterious Plain of Jars in Xieng Khouang, the country rewards travelers who slow down and look closely. It is a place where saffron-robed monks collect alms at dawn and fireflies light up the river at dusk.

Good to know
While French-influenced Lao is the official language, English is widely spoken in tourist areas — learning a few words of Lao is warmly received by locals. Getting around between regions is part of the adventure: slow boats along the Mekong between Huay Xai and Luang Prabang are an iconic two-day journey that shouldn't be rushed.
