Guyana

Guyana is South America's only English-speaking country, a wild and largely undiscovered gem tucked between Venezuela, Brazil, and Suriname. Its vast interior is a primeval world of rainforest, savannahs, and tepuis — ancient tabletop mountains — sheltering some of the continent's most extraordinary biodiversity. Travelers who seek authentic adventure and solitude over crowds find Guyana deeply rewarding.

  • Kaieteur Falls
  • Pristine Amazonian rainforest
  • Rupununi savannah wildlife
  • Creole & Amerindian cultures
  • Giant river otters & harpy eagles
  • Georgetown's colonial architecture
Best time to visit
The best time to visit is during the two dry seasons — February through April and August through November — when jungle trails and interior roads are most accessible and wildlife viewing peaks as animals gather around receding water sources.
Ideal trip length
10–14 days, because the most spectacular destinations — Georgetown, Kaieteur Falls, and the Rupununi — are spread across a large, remote interior that rewards unhurried exploration.

Good to know
English is the official language, making Guyana one of the most accessible countries in South America for U.S. travelers; small charter flights and lodge-based eco-tourism are the primary ways to reach the interior, so booking with a specialist outfitter well in advance is essential. Don't overlook the Rupununi — its vast wetlands and Amerindian community lodges offer some of the continent's most intimate wildlife encounters.
