Chad

Chad is one of Africa's most raw and unhurried travel frontiers, stretching from the sweeping sands of the Sahara in the north to the wildlife-rich wetlands of Lake Chad in the west and the Sahel savanna in the south. The country rewards genuinely curious travelers with dramatic desert landscapes, ancient rock art, and a tapestry of more than 200 ethnic groups whose traditions remain deeply alive. For those who seek destinations far off the beaten path, Chad offers a sense of discovery that few places on earth can still provide.

  • Ennedi Plateau rock arches
  • Saharan desert landscapes
  • Lake Chad wetlands
  • ancient Tibesti rock art
  • diverse ethnic cultures
  • Zakouma National Park wildlife
Best time to visit
November through February is the ideal window, when temperatures across the Sahara and Sahel are at their most bearable and wildlife congregates around water sources in the south.
Ideal trip length
10–14 days, as the vast distances between Chad's major regions — desert plateaus, the lake basin, and southern savannas — require time to travel meaningfully between them.

Good to know
French and Arabic are the official languages, and a working knowledge of French is a genuine asset outside of N'Djamena; in the far north, Arabic phrases go a long way with local communities. The Ennedi Plateau in the northeast — a UNESCO World Heritage site — is a region no serious desert traveler should overlook, best accessed with an experienced local guide and a well-outfitted overland vehicle.
