Angola

Angola is a vast, rewarding destination on Africa's Atlantic coast, where dramatic landscapes range from the red dunes of the Namib in the southwest to the lush highlands of the interior and the wildlife-rich floodplains of the Okavango headwaters. The country carries a deep cultural layering — Bantu traditions, Portuguese colonial architecture, and a vibrant contemporary art and music scene rooted in semba, the precursor to Brazilian samba. For travelers willing to venture off the well-worn African safari circuit, Angola offers genuine discovery and an authenticity that more-visited destinations rarely match.

  • Kalandula Falls
  • Namib Desert dunes
  • Luanda's colonial architecture
  • Semba & kizomba music
  • Kissama National Park wildlife
  • Fresh Atlantic seafood
Best time to visit
The dry season from May through October brings cooler temperatures, lower humidity, and the clearest skies — ideal for wildlife viewing and exploring the interior highlands without the muddy roads that heavy rains can bring.
Ideal trip length
10–14 days, which allows enough time to experience the contrasts between the cosmopolitan capital, the stark southwestern desert, and at least one of the country's remote national parks.
Pairs well with
NamibiaZambiaRepublic of the Congo
Good to know
Portuguese is the official language, and English is not widely spoken outside of major hotels and business districts in Luanda, so even a handful of basic Portuguese phrases goes a long way. For getting around, domestic flights are the most practical way to bridge Angola's considerable distances between regions, particularly when heading to the Namibe Desert or the remote eastern floodplains near Cuando Cubango.
