Albania

Albania is one of Europe's most rewarding surprises — a compact Balkan nation where dramatic mountain ranges, a sun-drenched Riviera, and layers of Ottoman, Byzantine, and Communist history collide in an unforgettable way. Despite its rich heritage and stunning landscapes, it remains far less crowded than its Mediterranean neighbors, rewarding travelers who seek authenticity over tourist polish. From the cobblestone lanes of Gjirokastër to the turquoise coves of the Albanian Riviera, the country consistently exceeds expectations.

Best time to visit
Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October) offer the best conditions — coastal temperatures are warm without the peak-summer heat, and the mountain trails are fully accessible and clear.
Ideal trip length
10–14 days, long enough to move between the northern Alps, the historic southern cities, and the Riviera coastline without feeling rushed.
Pairs well with

Good to know
Albanian (Shqip) is the official language and English is increasingly spoken among younger generations and in tourist areas, but learning a few local phrases goes a long way. Getting around is easiest by renting a car — it unlocks remote mountain villages and coastal stretches that public buses simply don't reach, and the drive through Llogara Pass alone is worth it.
